Diary of a Trip

So we decided to take the kids to Disneyland, California Adventure, and Sea World for the very first time. It was sort of my first time, I went once before when I was small but I don't remember much. I was laughing with a friend about how, with little ones, it's hard to call it a vacation, more like a "trip." Lots of fun and fatigue. It was wonderful, we had a great time. We stayed with my cousin Lucero and her husband Ryan in Irvine. Saturday, while driving, Ash randomly used the expression, "son of a motherless goat" in conversation. He swears this is from a movie. Can anyone verify this???
Sunday we attended church and the ward bldg is right next to the Newport Beach temple. Ash's company built this temple, and he did the financial estimating on it, so it was great for us to see it in person.
Ah, the reverence.

I thought this temple had the coolest landscaping.
This beach was called Crystal Cove.

I love this photo because this was the first time that Micah remembers being at the beach. He's been there before, but as an infant. He stopped and just stared when we reached the sand.

So Monday was our first day at Disneyland. The highlight was convincing Eliza to go on Splash Mountain with me. Am I a bad parent for subjecting my child to such sheer terror? After Splash Mountain. I know it looks bad, but the next day she said it was her favorite ride. :) Go Liza!
They had cool 3-D movies.

We spent Tuesday at Sea World in San Diego.

I just love this photo of Sarah. She always has that hair sticking up back there, because she has two little whirls right next to each other. I guess it's time for me to learn how to fix hair.

We spent Wednesday at California Adventure and got to see a neat Pixar parade. This next photo is how Sarah got her naps all week. It was funny because we don't use that carrier much, so if he couldn't see Sarah, Micah would look around for her in random places, like a bag.

We ate at Ariel's Grotto, this fun restaurant where all the princesses come around and visit each table. Micah was too shy for this, but the girls ate it up.
We lost this hat and I was kind of attached to it since Eliza wore it as well. Sarah usually chucked it after about 3 seconds.
Thursday, back to Disneyland. This is the Nemo submarine ride. Those legs and feet you see extending down into the submarine behind that man's head: those are not part of a mannequin operator. DO NOT GRAB HIM. He is a real person. I learned this the hard way.

Riding in the nose of the Monorail.
Our little pirate.
The kids thought the tram was one of the Disneyland rides; they loved it.

Sarah and Shamu.

Laguna Beach. Lucero took us here because it has great shells and Eliza wanted to start a collection.
By Friday, Ellie and Micah said they didn't want to go to Disneyland; they wanted to stay home and take a nap. Poor Micah; we could almost predict every day when his mid-afternoon meltdown would be.
Friday night we went out to dinner with Lucero and Ryan. The kids miss them already and they were such wonderful hosts. At night we got to soak in the hot tub while they sat at the apartment with our sleeping kids. Thanks for everything, guys!

I will verify that "son of a motherless goat" is from a movie; it's from Three Amigos. Let me give you the scene:
Dusty Bottoms: You slime-eating dog, you scum-sucking pig, you son of a motherless goat.
El Guapo: Son of a motherless goat?
Ned Nederlander: (whispers) tell us we will die like dogs
El Guapo: You will die like dog?
Lucky Day: No, we will not die like dogs. We will fight like lions because we are the THREE AMIGOS.

And the best part about me quoting that movie is I haven't seen it in 4-5 years. So, I'm vouching for Ashley on that line. And thanks for letting me quote the movie. Ah, that felt good.

It looks like you had fun in SoCal. Don't you have a new-found love of Disneyland now that you're a parent. It's awesome.

This trip looks like it was so much fun--and exhausting! Man, you guys are brave. That picture of you and Ellie on the beach--you look identical. I love the one with Ashley and Sarah napping and I love that Micah looks for her in bags. So cute that he's such a concerned big brother.

By the way, that was me, Aaron, that quoted Three Amigos above. I'm sure it was obvious, though.

That looks like so much fun. I'm glad you guys had a great time. We really need to get together so the kids can play and I can hear all about your trip. You got some really great pictures. I'm glad you guys made it home okay.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. I LOVE the picture of Ashley and Sarah napping. Classic. And I will have to remember that about Laguna Beach and the sea shells. Taylor always wants to go and collect them too and all we have ever been able to find is those clam ones, which are really quite lame. We looked and looked for a star fish at Seaworld, (you'd think they would of had one) but no such luck. What a bunch of great memories you all made.

WOW! You guys look like you had a ton of fun! I am so glad the kids enjoyed it. I am living the childhood excitements through your kids because Kyler would not know anything about the trips we take him on right now. And I am just so excited to get started on showing him the world! Sooner than later I am sure our time will come to show them Disney! We are so glad your trip went so well and you guys were safe! When our kids are all older we should have a Buchanan Family Reunion in Florida and show them Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot, and all the other parks. I am sure they would love the many things to do there when they are older! Love you guys! Uncle Jason and Aunt Ashley- Cousin Kyler too!

Yeah! I am glad that you are on here too! I feel like we never see you anymore since the nursery days! And we LOVED Eliza too...she and Taylor were just so cute and fun! And yes, Grady would take "pretend naps". The kids would love to play with the lights, and whenever they turned the lights off, he would pretend to fall asleep in his chair. Once they turned them back on, he would jump out of his chair like it woke him up. For some reason the kids thought it was SO funny...so needless to say it was a weekly ritual. Anyway...it looks like you guys had so much fun! It seems like almost everyone decided to take that same trip this year. It's the perfect time to get away, that's for sure! Maybe next year we should all plan the same mass "trip" together! :)

Oh my goodness! What a fun trip. You inspire me to brave So Cal and do this some day. Whitney and Cole ask me which of their toys are "Disney" (because if it's Disney, then the real one lives at Disneyland). They want to go so badly, but I think you're right about it not being a vacation...more of a trip, huh? I want to take the kids to Laguna beach like you guys did...what a great idea! The shells were gorgeous.

I'll have Tyler reply to your question about Eliza's tooth. He debated between pediatric dentistry and oral surgery for post-graduate specialties, so he might know something about Eliza's case.

You guys are such a cute family! Kudos to you for taking that BIG trip!

What a fun trip! We didn't even know you were gone when you called us from the road. The temple is beautiful (good job Ash, and Jacobsen I guess). :-) The kids looked like they had fun, it probably wore them out. Looks like Ben and I need to try the Disneyland thing when Ethan is a little older. And Ben's never been to the Beach, besides on his mission, but that doesn't count...he can't go in the water. Yes we want to get together, the 28th or 29th sound good to us...I don't think we have plans. Maybe we should go sooner this time so we beat the crowds (it doesn't help that I made us a half hour late last time either). With or without kids is fine with us. Just call me decisive.

Audrey, What a fun trip! We stayed in Newport Beach a few years ago. I got up and went running on the Crystal Cove beach one morning and ran right into a beached and dead sea lion, it was kind of gross. Anyway, the temple pictures are gorgeous! Welcome home to the cold and snow!!

You are much more brave that I am, though it looks like the bravery paid off with a really fun 'trip' for everyone. Looking at all those great pictures makes me want to be on the beach... like NOW! So great to see you and your cute kids, though Ashley needs to get behind the camera more so we can actually see you a little more often.
